Product information

Omega 3 6 9  provides a potent blend of Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9 complex fatty acids needed for metabolic regulation and structural support. Omega 3 fish oil contains both DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid), which is vital for good health.

Function/ Used for

Omega-3 fats are a crucial part of human cell membranes. They also have a number of other important functions, including improving heart health, brain function, eye health, immunity and much more. Omega 3 fatty acids can increase "good" HDL cholesterol. They can also reduce triglycerides, blood pressure and the formation of arterial plaques.

Cochrane Omega-3 Review

July 18, 2018

Dr Carrie Ruxton, from the Health and Food Supplements Information Service, said: “Early studies of omega-3 fats, involving thousands of participants, found a protective benefit for the heart but in our highly medicalised age, where many older people are maintained on statins and blood pressure medication, it is much harder to pick up the modest effects of dietary change.

“This doesn’t mean that it’s not worth taking omega-3s as we currently consume just half of the 400mg DHA and EPA a day recommended by UK nutrition experts.

“Oily fish is the best natural source but fewer than a third of adults, and one in ten teenagers, eat any oily fish on a regular basis. So, for those who won’t eat mackerel, salmon or herring, a daily fish oil supplement is a useful way of meeting recommendations.

“Omega-3s are also used by the body to maintain the health of the eyes, immune function and brain so it’s not all about the heart. It’s

about ensuring that your body has the right levels of nutrients whether via foods or topped up with a supplement to bridge dietary gaps”.

Take one capsule daily with water.

As a supplement

Like the omega-3 and omega-6 fats, the omega-9 fats also provide health benefits, namely anti-inflammatory properties that enhance joint healing and may help prevent numerous diseases. But unlike omega-3 and omega-6, the omega-9 fatty acids are not essential fats.

Found in (dietary sources)

Fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids include mackerel, salmon, trout, kippers, anchovies, sardines pilchards, herring and whitebait

Precautions and contraindications

Over-dosing on too much omega-6, which is found in the corn oil and vegetable oils used in so much American food. Too much omega 6 can raise your blood pressure, lead to blood clots that can cause heart attack and stroke, and cause your body to retain water

Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding

Beware borage and evening primrose oils. Often a part of 3-6-9 blends. During pregnancy, not sure if these are safe. You should ask your doctor or midwife.

Cod liver oil or other fish liver oil supplements should not be taken by women who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy because high amounts of vitamin A may be present.

Fish body oils do not contain vitamin A and are safe to consume up to 3000mg a day. Supplements made from the body (flesh) of fish, often called omega-3  supplements, are safe to take in pregnancy. However, you need to check that nothing else has been added to the supplement.

  • Supplements made from the liver of fish, such as cod liver oil, are not safe to take in pregnancy.

Both types of fish oil supplements contain beneficial long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, which help your baby’s brain and eyes to develop. In the long-term, they may also help to protect you against heart disease.

However, cod liver oil also contains high levels of the retinol form of vitamin A. You shouldn’t take supplements containing the retinol form of vitamin A when you’re pregnant, because large amounts of retinol can harm your baby.

There’s no official recommendation that pregnant women should take a fish oil supplement. Some research suggests that babies born to women taking omega-3 long-chain fatty acids weigh a little more and are less likely to be born early, but more research needs to be carried out to be sure.
